samedi 28 décembre 2013 / Saturday 28th December 2013 16h 30 / 4:30 pm - Adrian Foster organ/orgue Music for Epiphany Musique pour L'Epiphanie

Concert Review
A sizable crowd was treated to a vast array of music for Epiphany by Christ Church's Assistant Organist, Adrian Foster. Many of the works were by contemporary french masters: Tournemire, Messiaen & Langlais, but the programme also featured works by Helmut Walcha and Ned Rorem. Adrian had this organ sounding its absolute best by carefully choosing sounds and adjusting articulations to achieve astounding clarity and weight in his performance — something the acoustics of Christ Church greatly demand from the organist. With audience members coming as far as from Atlanta and even New Zealand, this celebration of Epiphany music was greatly enjoyed by all. Truly; a wonderful selection, interpretation, and execution of all the music. Bravo for such an enthralling performance of Rorem's Ocean of Light

samedi 21décembre 2013 / Saturday 21st December 2013 16h 30 / 4:30 pm - Patrick Wedd orgue / organ La Nativité du Seigneur (1935) Messiaen

Concert Review
Patrick Wedd presented a spectacular interpretation of Messiaen's "La Nativité du Seigneur" on Saturday. His artful mastery of Messiaen's unique harmonic and rhythmic language, coupled with carefully selected registrations that Dr. Wedd tailored especially for the Christ Church organ, shone a new light on this festive favourite. Christ Church has now taken to projecting the organist in the loft onto a screen at the front of the church, thus allowing all a spectacular view of a top-notch performance of this incredible work. Acclamations for the final movement — Dieu parmi nous. Bravo, Patrick!

Audience, orchestra and soloists
directed by Patrick Wedd

The Sing-Along Messiah at Christ Church Cathedral, with professional soloists, an orchestra of young musicians from The Schulich Music School at McGill University, all under the uplifting direction of the marvellous Patrick Wedd, is one of the season’s great traditions in Montreal!
The event will start with a 30-minute ‘dress rehearsal’ in which you will have the chance to practise the magnificent choruses from Handel’s oratorio accompanied by the soloists and orchestra. Following that there will be a full performance of the Christmas section of Messiah as detailed below. We very much encourage you to bring along your family and friends to enjoy this event too!
With a sizeable orchestra, four soloists, heating, lighting, printing and publicity fees, the Sing-Along Messiah is presented at considerable cost by the Cathedral. In order to make your contribution towards covering the costs of the event, we ask you to make a suggested ‘participation donation’ of $10, which this year includes a donation of $2 to further develop the Cathedral Music Program.
Patrick writes,
“Under my leadership, the Cathedral Music Program has expanded its efforts in 2013. In addition to offering sung Evensongs on three weekday afternoons at 5:15 p.m. and two choral services on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., we have added a French Choral Eucharist on Sundays at 12:45 p.m. This marks an important and historic shift for the Cathedral, as it seeks to open its doors even wider to the community it serves.
The Cathedral Music Program is at the front and centre of these endeavours, providing scholarships for any Montreal child interested in singing at the Cathedral, and sharing our love of liturgical music and fellowship through song with our community. The music we sing is drawn from a rich choral repertoire and includes a mix of traditional and contemporary works.”
Thank you for supporting the Music Program at Christ Cathedral, and we look forward to meeting you at this year’s Sing-Along Messiah on Saturday 14th December, 5pm.

Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) Serenade

Concert Review
L’Oasis Musicale’s celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Britten reached a new high at last week’s concert with an ambitious and compelling performance of the composer’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings. The Chamber Music Without Borders String Ensemble, comprising mainly young musicians from McGill along with some guests, was conducted with precision, sensitivity and assurance by John Wiens, and provided a highly complementary accompaniment to the soloists. Kevin Myers, tenor and Gabriel Mairson, horn both possessed a fine range of tone, colour and mood to match the varying atmospheres conveyed by these masterful settings of English poetry. In the first half Shayna Palevsky, flute displayed fine phrasing and a lovely legato line in pieces written by Britten’s composition teacher Frank Bridge, whilst Linda Brady produced a silvery and shimmering performance of Ravel’s Ondine. Bravo and thank you to all the artists in this wonderful concert.

Flute Sonata (1927) Allegro moderato, Aria           Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942)

samedi 9 novembre 2013 / Saturday 9th November 2013 16h 30 / 4:30 pm - Musique d'Europe 1941-195, Trio Monbraque

Concert Review
The Trio Monbraque was in excellent form for their concert this past week at L'Oasis Musicale. Jonathan Bailey's flute playing, particularly in Messiaen's Le Merle Noir, was finely constructed, passionate, and engaging. His tone on the flute was soaring through the variations and rhythmically challenging music. Genevieve Beaudet proved an excellent pianist partner for him in the Prokofiev Sonata Op. 94, a piece requiring enormous endurance and tenacity from both musicians.  Donald Pistolesi joined them for Martinu's trio H300, a charming work, which in contrast to how it may appear on the score, sounded perfectly natural to the ear. In all, a terrific concert.
