Patrick Wedd, organist and music director of Christ Church Cathedral, had barely touched the keys and pedals of the 1980 Wilhelm organ unleashing the Toccata and Fugue in D-minor and it was as if it were he who had cut through the heat and humidity under which Montreal had laboured for days. The bolt of lightning and long roll of thunder that marked the opening of the toccata would in moments surrender to the logic, balance and sonority that mark the resolution of the fugue. The storm had passed. No need now for the flutter of fans as Patrick deftly led the programme through a collection of Bach’s best-loved melodies that brought smiles of recollection from even the most casual of tourists who had stumbled by accident upon the Saturday afternoon recital.
