Six dances – following traditional Italian convention - are exploited in J.S. Bach’s (oddly titled) French Suites and the composer’s second begins the concert, which explores a variety of forms, styles, and pianistic technique from a range of European composers. Three “Images” by Claude Debussy exemplify French impressionism and take listeners through a variety of colours, sounds, and imaginings before Franz Schubert’s pastoral-like - yet virtuosic - opus 664 pushes the boundaries of Classical sonata form. The concert concludes in Eastern Europe with Zoltán Kodály’s orchestral transcription of traditional Hungarian dances from the Transylvanian region formerly known as Marosszék.
