J.S. Bach's Double Violin Concerto in D minor and Violin Concerto in A minor were scored for strings and basso continuo during Bach's period of employment as Kapellmeister at Cöthen; the concertos also exist in transcriptions for harpsichord made by the composer in Leipzig in 1722. Waxman's Carmen Fantasie is a virtuoso showpiece for violin and orchestra; it is part of the composer's score to the 1946 movie Humoresque. The music is based on various themes from Bizet's opera Carmen.
