August 31, 2013 16h30 / 4.30pm - L'Après-midi d'une flûte. Shayna Palevsky, flute

Concert Review
Thank you so much to Shayna Palevsky, flute, Linda Brady, piano Jolan Kovacs & Stephanie Stringer, violins and Sonia Carreau-Larivière, cello for a really enjoyable and varied L'Oasis Musicale concert yesterday. Shayna's melodious flute sound soared up into the rafters of the cathedral like a Sérénade aux Étoiles, the César Cui trio danced along jauntily and the Pergolesi Concerto featured lovely ensemble playing, especially in the haunting slow movement. A large audience enjoyed this lovely musical offering - thank you Shayna, Linda and friends!

August 24, 2013, 16h30 / 4.30pm. 'And the Pianoforte Sings...' / 'Ainsi chante le pianoforte' - Gohar Manvelyan, piano

Concert Review
Many thanks to Gohar Manvelyan for an exquisite recital last Saturday. Gohar's lightness of touch, attention to detail and beautiful musical phrasing entranced the large audience present at Christ Church Cathedral. The different movements of the Bach Partita took on their own delightful character, inspired by its origin in dance form, as Gohar had helpfully explained to the audience,  The Haydn variations grew in grandeur and intensity, and the Chopin Ballade was delivered with both sensitivity and majesty. Thank you Gohar, and we look forward to welcoming you back to L'Oasis Musicale.

Concert Review
Thank you to Zoey Cochran and Madga Boukanan, Duo Mezzopiano, for a very entertaining L'Oasis Musicale concert at Christ Church cathedral last Saturday. Charting 'The Life and Loves of a Diva', the duo cleverly wove together a wide variety of songs and arias, from Purcell to the Sherman brothers, into an enjoyable and cohesive musical narrative. The very large audience greeted the final song with a standing ovation, and then was treated to two encores from this talented Duo. Congratulations, Duo Mezzopiano, and we look forward to welcoming you back to L'Oasis Musicale in the future.

August 17 2013 13h 00 / 1pm, Duo FAE

Concert Review
The audience for the 1 pm concert of the FAE Duo heard two very strong and exciting performers whose reading of their music was both passionate and polished. Their rendition of Beethoven's Sonata Op. 23 in a minor was particularly moving, the Lutoslawski Subito was smartly conceived, and the Brahms Sonata No. 3 was full of the frustration, acceptance, and heartfelt resignation that makes it live as brilliantly today as when it was originally scored. Another truly moving performance for this Duo.

Comment from an appreciative audience member
'Today's Music for Mary was amazing. Such magnificent and huge music within which, paradoxically,
I found myself quietly cradled--comforted and sustained. So hard to put into words.
Thank you so much, Patrick Wedd'

August 10 2013, Elinor Frey - solo cello

Concert Review
Many thanks to Elinor Frey for sharing the unique and expressive voice of her cello with us at yesterday’s L’Oasis Musicale concert. Elinor’s concert was elegantly framed by two of Bach’s most celebrated works: the Suite in G and the Ciaccona from the Partita in D minor, originally written for violin, but which Elinor played with great skill and passion on her 5-stringed Beaulieu cello. In between were a delightful group of pieces by Italian cello-composers of the 17th century. Throughout, Elinor played with a lightness of touch, beautiful phrasing and flawless intonation and held the audience in hushed appreciation. Elinor will also be appearing at the Salle Bourgie’s Baroque Matinees series on Thursday 19th September at 11am.
